Sanatayn (two-year Islamic Studies course for post-16s)

Jamea also offers an abridged two-year version of the six-year Alimiyyah course. This includes: Tajweed, Qur’anic commentary,  Ahaadith, Fiqh and Aqaa’id and basic Arabic. This course is delivered in the English medium and can be taken in conjunction with A Level courses.

A brief overview of subject content covered in the course:

Qur’an and Tajweed

Tajweed comprises of the correct phonetic pronunciation of the alphabet, along with understanding and implementation of science of reciting the Qur’an according to the teachings of Imam Hafs. The subject is taught both theoretically and practically, so that students are provided with the opportunity to implement each new strand of Tajweed into their recitation of the Qur’an.  Students are also encouraged to memorise a few short chapters of the Qur’an along with essential daily prayers. By the second year, students are expected to read the Qur’an correctly with fluency.

Qur’anic commentary

The entire Qur’an is translated to English and studied alongside a commentary to provide students with an opportunity to be able interpret the text in light of its political and socio-historical context, so that the words of Allah can be understood in their full relevance for contemporary society.

Ahaadith (Prophetic traditions)

Students are taught a selection of ahaadith from the collection of Imam Bukhari, which they study alongside a commentary to provide students with an opportunity to be able to interpret the ahaadith in light of their political and socio-historical context, so that the words of the Prophet (peace be upon him) can be understood in their full relevance for contemporary society. Furthermore, the collection of Ahadeeth studied aid in the moral and social development of the students as human beings.

Fiqh

The Fiqh syllabus is divided into sections designed to discuss every aspect of a Muslim’s daily life. It begins with basic introductions to fundamentals such as physical and spiritual cleanliness, prayer and proceeds to discuss other significant issues such as financial literacy and marriage. A number of issues affecting the youth such as drugs, sex, health and safety issues are also dealt with where learners can engage the educator. Upon completion of the course, students are expected to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of all major aspects in a person’s life from an Islamic point of view.

Aqaa’id

This subject offers a detailed insight into the different belief systems which exist within Islam, and the fundamental differences between them.  Commentary is provided through Qur’an and Hadith.

Arabic

Students are introduced to the basic components of Arabic syntax, morphology and etymology with the end goal being an appreciation for the interpretation and analysis of the Qur’an and Hadith.
